Sons and Daughters (The Heart of the Father)

“In my family, is my grandpa, my grandma, me and my brother,” fifteen-year-old Mona said. We were paired off with students at the English class we have been teaching in partnership with the leaders of the House of Prayer, talking with each other about our families. When I (Amy) asked about her parents, Mona shared that her parents were divorced. Her dad had remarried and a had a four-year-old son together with his new wife. Mona hadn’t seen her dad in years, even though she lived with his parents. When I asked about her mom, she said she didn’t know where she was or even if she was still alive. I asked what she and her family did together in their free time, and she said they didn’t really do anything together. After school, she usually would just go to the mall or spend time with her friends. Mona wiped a few tears from her eyes as she talked about her family. It made me sad that her family was so disconnected.

Back to School

“Uan,” one of our students at Dton Naam, is thrilled to have entered a reputable hair cutting/styling course after having been patiently waiting for this opportunity since January. He is also working on completing the Thai equivalent of his GED.

I see Jesus

I (Amy) love how active God is in revealing himself. I’ve always known He is the God who pursues, but when I see Him do so, it touches a deep part of me.

Since before coming to Thailand, we felt that this was a key time for Thailand and we are beginning to see the reality of that. God is on the move here. Over the past few weeks, the House of Prayer we are connected to has had a couple of times where a pre-believer has come and sat and read the Bible in the prayer room for hours. One of these individuals came because of a dream. In the dream, they saw the name of the church that the house of prayer meets at and knew they were supposed to go there. They drove a long distance across the city to get to the prayer room and spent several hours there, reading the Bible.

IMG_1600Recently, our church had a special baptismal service on a Saturday. Since “T”, one of our neighbor girls, loves coming with us to church, we invited her to come with us. During the service, T was intrigued, as she had never seen anyone get baptized before. She curiously asked about what the people were doing and Matt and the Thais who were around her explained that they were making a commitment to follow Jesus.

“I want to get in that water,” T exclaimed. “I see Jesus over the water!”

While we loved her enthusiasm, we told her that we felt she needed to ask her parents first before she got baptized and the Thais with us agreed. After the service, one of the gals who had been talking with T took her to talk with the pastor who had been baptizing people and explained that she wanted to get baptized. I told him that she’s one of our neighbor girls and that we felt it was important she talk with her parents before taking that step. He agreed and said, “But what we can do is pray with you today to accept Jesus into your heart.” And right there, T prayed to make Jesus her Lord. The next day, T went with us to the Sunday morning church service and shared with Matt how she had talked with her parents about her decision to become a Christian. Her mom had said, “You can follow Jesus every day!” and told her she could get baptized too.

Our hearts are so stirred as we see God in pursuit of people here and our hearts’ desire is to partner with Him in it.

In other news –

  • Our English class with our students at Dton Naam is continuing to go well. We recently read Amy’s favorite part of the book, where the children first hear the name of Aslan and C.S. Lewis beautifully pens the reactions of each child’s heart. Our students’ hearts are still engaged and enjoying the book. As we read, we are seeing their English skills grow and we are trying to draw out the deeper meaning of the story as we are able.
  • Matt has been taking on a social work role with some of our Dton Naam students to help them reach their goals and take steps towards healing.
  • Amy just wrapped up teaching a soul care class to the Dton Naam students, sharing with them about basic principles of walking in freedom in Christ such as breaking down strongholds of lies and creating new strongholds of truth and forgiving those who have hurt us. It was a powerful time, both for the students and for Amy, who had never taught on such things before and found that teaching on those things brought it to a whole new level of understanding for her.
  • Amy’s friend, May, has continued going to church with us weekly and Amy’s tried to make it a point to connect with him after the service each week. He’s quite busy doing hair school but the two have been glad for their weekly connections over lunch.
  • One of our students at Dton Naam has been visiting church with us lately as well. He had never heard the gospel before coming to Dton Naam and so we are thankful for his curiosity and desire to learn more.
  • We’ve been starting to have regular monthly FaceTime calls with one of our pastors back in the States. It’s been very encouraging for us!
  • Amy’s sister, brother-in-law, and nieces are arriving tonight for a visit. We are so excited to spend some time with them over the next couple of weeks!

Thank you for your significance in our journey. We are grateful to all of you who believe in us, encourage us and make it possible for us to be here.

Much love,

Matt, Amy, Jed & Alizah

Our Neighbors – Prayer Update

1e30ac42-3e47-477c-b816-a1f2fa7fe77bOver the past couple of weeks our little neighbors have continued to build relationships with us. We are encouraged to see how love is making a difference. Non, for example, has been asking for hugs from Matt when he comes to our house. This isn’t typical for Thais, who generally speaking, are hesitant to give or receive physical affection.

It’s also beautiful to see Jed learn how to pray for his neighbors. Each night before bed he asks to pray for his friends and will ask Amy to sing “Jesus loves me” for JJ, or one of his other friends.

We would love to ask you to join with us in prayer this week for our neighborhood as we have had a special opportunity come up to reach them. Each month, the house of prayer we are a part of does an outreach into one of the neighborhoods around the city. This past weekend, they informed us that they would like to come to our neighborhood specifically to pray for the families of the children who have been coming to our home and to share the gospel with our neighbors. The leadership of the House of Prayer has been aware that the neighborhood children have been coming to our house and relationships have been forming, but the Lord was the one who put it on their hearts to specifically target our neighborhood with their upcoming outreach. Please join with us in praying that the Lord will move powerfully this weekend and bring those in our neighborhood into a radical encounter with Himself.

Thank you for reading our updates, for praying and believing with us that Jesus will have His inheritance in this nation and in our neighborhood.

Much love,
Matt, Amy, Jedidiah & Alizah

Pʉ̂ʉan-Bâan Kɔ̌ɔng-Rao (Our Neighbors)

IMG_6354In the last month, we have been praying for God to open up doors in our neighborhood for us to share the Gospel. Though we had been having one of the neighborhood children come to our house often prior to praying for an open door, since then we’ve been having seven kids come to our house on a regular basis, which is a little stressful some days, but is an amazing opportunity to love. We really believe God is entrusting us with this as we didn’t go seeking these kids out- rather they came to our door and we welcomed them in. Continue reading

To Narnia and the North

We recently had a new student join Dton Naam. He comes in each day with bright eyes and a gentle, yet enthusiastic heart. When it came time to meet with him the first time for English class, we quickly realized that his English is already quite good. We decided to get a book to read with him, thinking it may mean one-on-one sessions as his English is more advanced than our other students. Continue reading

Reen

Recently we have had opportunities to have deeper conversations with students at Dton Naam about life and faith. One thing we have recently heard from “Reen”, one of the Dton Naam students who is not yet a believer, is that he has seen how Christians give of their lives and bless others because they genuinely love people from their hearts. Reen contrasted this with how he has seen Buddhists do things for others only to make merit and ultimately benefit themselves. Because of our partners to do what God has laid on their hearts to do, we have been able to be a part of seeing God’s love made tangible to these guys. We are so thankful to each of you who have given of your lives so we can give of ours.

Sanam Luang Outreach

Last night I (Matt) went on an with another local Bangkok ministry into the Sanam Luang area of Bangkok near the Grand Palace. During the day the Grand Palace and Wat Pho draw some of the biggest crowds of tourists in all of Bangkok. After these well-known tourist attractions close for the day and the sun sets, this area is a notorious gay prostitution area where Thai men come purchase other Thai men.

Locked In

“I just got a message from a girl who wants to come, but she’s locked in to the bar until 10am.” Hearing these words on a recent trip to Pattaya from Daniel, the director of the Tamar Center, reminded me of the stark reality of the situation that many people we minister to face. We don’t know if the men and ladyboys we minister to have similar experiences of literally being locked in to the bar or massage parlor they work in. What we do know is that they are trapped or feel trapped in the life they have created for themselves or others have created for them, with finances being a key factor that keeps them in bondage. As this new year begins we are excited to see how God will bring keys for freedom.

We recently took a trip to Pattaya where we met up with another ministry to see how they do outreach. Valuable insights gained!

In 2017, we felt like God was laying the foundation for us as individuals and a family to succeed here in Thailand. It’s already been a big year for us with the birth of Alizah, but we know God has much more. We feel that 2018 is a year to lay a foundation for our ministry to succeed.

We are continuing to learn Thai with Matt going to language school once a week for a half day and the two of us meeting with a Thai language tutor for a couple of hours over coffee and Thai workbooks to help us learn how to talk about the Bible and pray in Thai.

While Amy’s spending the majority of her time right now at home with the kids on a maternity leave, she is helping with planning English classes to teach our students or on outreach. Matt has been teaching English and Bible to our students at Dton Naam and has already had some interesting conversations come up since returning from his paternity leave. We are confident that as he continues working with the Dton Naam students that doors for deeper relationship and ministry opportunities will continue to open up.

Dinner with friends

In late January we had a sweet time hosting one of our pre-believer Thai friends and his wife in our home for the first time. We shared a meal and enjoyed each other’s company.

We are also having some wonderful opportunities outside of Dton Naam open up for ministry. Matt has been meeting with a young man who is a new believer once a week for discipleship and has also been invited to serve in a newly forming men’s ministry at Living Streams Church. Amy has began going to a weekly women’s Bible study and has been enjoying getting to know other young American women while studying the book of 2 Timothy. We continue to be a part of the house of prayer, with opportunities to lead in prayer and occasional opportunities to teach.

As we look forward to 2018, we are so excited for what God is doing and one of the areas we feel the Lord highlighting to us as a couple is to saturate our outreach efforts in prayer. Dton Naam currently has the capacity to bring in five new students and we are confident that the Lord is eager to bring them in quickly. Will you agree with us for those who we meet in the red light districts each week during our outreaches to be touched deeply by the love of God? Will you agree with us for hope to ignite in their hearts along with an insatiable desire for change? We know that helping five individuals is a small start when we consider how many thousands of men and ladyboys are working in prostitution in this city. Will you agree with us for our capacity to take in more students to expand?

We Are Locked In – Are You?

We are beyond blessed, because so many of you have taken part in being a light for Christ in Thailand. Through your prayers and financial support, we are strengthened. I echo Paul’s words from Philippians 1:3-5 when he said, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.” I (Matt) recently was emailing with one of our supporters who told me that she thinks about us and prays for us all the time. I say all of this because on our hard days, it is an encouragement to know we have you behind us.

As you have read, we are moving forward with stepping into full-time ministry after focusing for this past season on Thai language and cultural studies. We are locked in to the Lord’s heart and desire to bring freedom to those we encounter and are eager to move forward. To be able to step into what God has for us in this new season, we are going to need to expand our current team of financial partners who join with us in special gifts and those who partner with us regularly. We are looking for 30 new partners who would join with us at $50 per month. We ask that you pray about what role you might play in this work and let us know what the Lord is telling you. We’d love to connect with you more about what we are doing and how you can be a part of it.

Thank you for standing with us in this journey. Your prayers and support mean so much to us!

Love,

Matt, Amy, Jed and Alizah
